Thermal wear or softshell?
Thermal wear and softshell are both often used in spring and autumn, but the materials have different strengths. The right choice depends mainly on temperature, wind, rain, activity and whether the clothing will be worn on its own or as a mid-layer.

When is thermal wear a good choice?
Thermal wear is insulating and relatively light. It provides good freedom of movement and often works well on dry, cool days. A thermal set can also be worn as a mid-layer under rainwear when a child needs both warmth and protection from rain. Thermal wear is not necessarily designed for prolonged rain. Always check the individual style’s specifications when water repellency or other technical features are important.
When is softshell a good choice?
Softshell is typically designed for movement and protection against wind and light, changeable weather. The flexible material can be a practical choice on active days. Softshell is not the same as classic rainwear, and features vary between styles.
Compare the need
- Choose thermal wear when additional insulation and a light mid-layer are most important.
- Choose softshell when wind protection, flexibility and active use are the priority.
- Add rainwear when a child will be outdoors in prolonged or heavy rain.
- Adjust base and mid-layers so that the child is neither too cold nor too warm.
Can a child use both?
Yes. They complement each other in many wardrobes. Thermal wear can work well on cool, dry days and underneath rainwear. A softshell jacket can be practical in windy weather and during active play. The weather and the specific activity determine what works best on a particular day.

Thermal wear with fleece
LWSAKU 612 has a microfleece lining in the jacket. The sets also have a water-repellent BIONIC-FINISH® ECO surface treatment, are windproof and have reinforcement at the knees and seat.
Thermal wear without fleece
LWSCOUT 206 is recorded without fleece in the material data for the three colours shown. This lightweight thermal wear is a practical choice for cool transitional days and as a layer underneath rainwear.
