What does a water column rating mean?
When looking at children’s outerwear, you will often see figures such as 5,000, 10,000 or 15,000 mm. These figures describe the material’s water column rating and are used as a technical indication of how much water pressure the material can withstand.

How a water column rating is measured
In a laboratory test, a column of water is placed against the material. The height of the water column is measured in millimetres when water begins to pass through. A material with a 10,000 mm rating has therefore withstood greater test pressure than a material with a lower figure.
What water column rating does a child need?
The answer depends on the weather, the activity and how long the child is outdoors. Quiet play on wet ground can place different pressure on clothing from a short walk in light rain. A single figure therefore cannot be translated into a precise amount of rain or a fixed number of hours.
As a rule of thumb, a higher figure provides greater technical capacity against water pressure. Do not choose on the highest figure alone, however – the whole construction should suit the child’s needs.

Seams and construction also make a difference
Even when the outer material has a high water column rating, water can enter through stitching and openings. Taped seams help protect the stitched areas. Also consider fastenings, the hood, sleeve and leg openings, and whether the clothing fits appropriately as the child moves.

Breathability and activity
A child can become damp from the inside if the body produces more heat and moisture than the clothing can transport away. Breathability is therefore relevant, especially during active play. Comfort also depends on temperature, base layers, fit and activity level.
Care affects performance
Always follow the product’s care instructions. Incorrect washing or care can affect materials and surface treatments. Close zips and hook-and-loop fastenings, and avoid products discouraged by the care label. Only reactivate or renew a surface treatment according to the specific product instructions.

- A water column rating is a laboratory measurement of a material’s resistance to water pressure.
- A higher figure is not automatically the right choice for every child and situation.

- Read the specifications for the individual style instead of assuming that all products in a category are the same.
